Yesterday, October 19, Oppo presented two new smartphones - R9s and R9s Plus. The characteristics and renderings of the models leaked to the network a week before the announcement, so this event was not a surprise. Among the features of the new products, one can single out a 16 MP front camera, a metal case and an unreasonably high price tag.

R9s received a metal body and a 5.5-inch screen with Full HD resolution. The display is covered with protective glass Gorilla Glass 5, made using 2.5D technology.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 is used as a processor, Adreno 506 is responsible for graphics. The device is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM. For those who find this not enough, there is support for microSD (up to 256 GB).

The battery capacity is 2850 mAh, and the proprietary VOOC fast charging technology allows you to charge it by 75% in half an hour. In addition, do not forget that the new items received processors from Qualcomm with support for Quick Charge 3.0.

Frame R9s Plus also made of metal, it differs from the younger model in an increased diagonal, which is 6 inches. The screen area occupies 79% of the front panel, and the thickness of the smartphone is 7.35 mm.

Snapdragon 653 with Adreno 510 graphics became the heart of the device. The novelty received 6 GB of RAM and 64 ROM. Like the R9s, the older model is equipped with a microSD slot. The battery capacity is 4120 mAh.

When using a metal case, mobile manufacturers face the problem of antenna wiring. Oppo's engineers have been especially careful about this issue and instead of large contours, they made barely noticeable lines (0.3 mm), which leaves the impression of all-metal performance. Thus, the proportion of metal in the body was increased to 98.8%. In addition, according to the manufacturer, such changes have improved the quality of Wi-Fi signal reception.

But the main feature of the new products is not the case, and not even the thin frames around the display, but the photo capabilities of the flagships. The previous version of the younger model of the device (R9) was equipped with 13 MP main and 16 MP front cameras, while the older one had 16 MP. In the new generation, both models are equipped with 16 MP cameras with optics from Sony (IMX398). The lens aperture of the main module is F / 1.7, the front one is F2.0. The size of the matrix and a single pixel is 1/2.3″ and 1.55 microns, respectively. The main difference between the phablet is the presence of optical stabilization in the main camera, while the R9s has only electronic stabilization.

Both models are equipped with a fingerprint scanner located in the Home button and have a slot for two SIM cards. New items are running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with a proprietary ColorOS 3.0 shell.

The Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus are available in three colors: black, gold, and rose gold.

The price of the younger version is $415, the older version is $519. Sales in the native Chinese market will start on October 28, 2016.

OPPO has officially unveiled the flagship R9 Plus, which could be a real breakthrough for the company. The developers used new technologies that were left aside in the manufacture of previous R-series models. The main feature was a revolutionary solution regarding cameras, but first things first.

Design and functionality

From the first glance at the R9 Plus, it becomes clear that the developers wanted to create an elegant, representative smartphone that will emphasize the high social status of the owner. There is nothing superfluous on the body, it has no sharp corners, so the phone fits comfortably in the hand. And all this with dimensions of 163.1 x 80.78 x 7.4 mm and a weight of 185 g.

The 1.76 mm thick frame around the case gives a unique and modern design. However, in general, the appearance does not have unique features: all the elements provided have already been used in smartphones from other manufacturers more than once.

OPPO used a fingerprint scanner for the first time, which is undoubtedly the right move to achieve popularity. It is combined with the physical button "Home" and is located on the front panel under the screen. An oval was chosen as the form factor.

Above the screen are the speaker, a set of sensors, and the front-facing camera, which is the main attraction of the R9 Plus. On the back cover is the main camera with LED flash, and the company logo flaunts in the center.

All the necessary buttons and connectors are located on the side faces. On the left is a volume rocker, on the right is a power button and a microSD slot. A connector for synchronization with microUSB devices, a 3.5 mm audio output and a stereo speaker are available from below, which is emphasized by the “radiator” design of the case section.

Screen and camera

The specifications of the OPPO R9 Plus can really surprise you. The display has a diagonal of 6 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The brightness indicators are high, so the high-quality display of information is guaranteed even when exposed to direct sunlight. The viewing angle before distortion is approximately 160°. The manufacturer did not indicate the technology by which the screen is made. There is a possibility that an AMOLED panel was used.

So we got to the main exhibit of the exhibition - the front camera. She received a 16 MP sensor with f / 2.0 aperture. To put it simply, the camera is able to collect light very quickly and take a picture without diffraction distortion of details. In addition, the lens is equipped with a stabilizer and autofocus.

The main camera also received 16 megapixels and is represented by a 6-element Sony IMX298 module.

Performance and autonomy

As already mentioned, R9 Plus belongs to the category of flagships, albeit not of the highest level. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 652 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Built-in memory for information storage is available in two versions - 64 or 128 GB.

Unlike many manufacturers, OPPO has taken care of the battery life of the flagship. He received a battery with a capacity of 4120 mAh, which ensures the active use of the phone during the day. This is a good indicator, given the screen size and high performance.

Confidence in battery life is provided by VOOC fast charging technology, which allows you to get about 70% charge in just 30 minutes.

Operating system and price

In terms of software, the company gave up. The smartphone runs on Android 5.1, so many modern features and functions will simply not be available. The manufacturer does not explain why such a decision is connected, but this can greatly damage the reputation of the gadget.

According to preliminary data, OPPO R9 Plus will go on sale on April 12. With support for LTE networks, Wi-Fi 802.11ac wireless data transmission standard and 64 GB of flash memory, the flagship will be available for $510.

Type of

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to stop the choice on the phone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

If you ask users of modern mobile gadgets about what alternative to the flagships from Samsung the market can offer, this question would puzzle many. Of course, someone will talk about current Apple products, in particular about the Apple iPhone 6S or the recently released Apple iPhone SE. Yes, this is a direct competitor to Samsung, but it is illogical to compare such cell phones: a completely different operating system and fundamental differences in technology. So there are no alternatives? Few people would guess that the answer would be completely unexpected: a little-known Chinese manufacturer in the domestic market offers Oppo R9 Plus is a smartphone that is not only not inferior to competitors, but also demonstrates advanced features.

New Features

Many will want to know what the Chinese industry is offering this time around and how it is possible to compare Chinese phones with a global brand. It's simple: one has only to look at the device, both characteristics and design features are striking. It should also be noted that Oppo did compete with the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge by releasing the Vivo Xplay5 with a curved display (yes, Vivo is the same Oppo, but for other markets). By the same analogy, one can compare oppo r9 plus- a balanced version of the sensational flagship, which was created for the same purpose as the Samsung Galaxy A7 model.

An interesting feature is that the company is trying to get between Apple and Samsung. Judge for yourself: while both manufacturers compete, something new comes out with a clear Apple design and some Samsung chips. As for the quality, everything should be all right with this: for example, the latest display has the same Samsung amoled used in the latest edge.

Technical capabilities

Few people will not notice that the manufacturer is trying to make itself known with technical characteristics. The Oppo R9 Plus platform includes an eight-core SnapDragon 652, an Adreno 510 graphics component and as many as 4 gigabytes of RAM, as well as 64/128 gigabytes of permanent (expandable). At the same time, the device is not positioned as a full-fledged flagship. It is also important to mention the 4120 mAh battery and the advanced 16 megapixel camera. In addition, the user receives a high-quality six-inch AMOLED, all possible wireless technologies and support for two SIM cards. Well, the phablet will definitely attract the attention of all fans of Chinese gadgets.

Big smartphone and more

Probably, Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Meizu, Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE should be thanked for the active development of fashion for budget smartphones with the design and materials of flagships, but in the middle price segment, one of the first to apply this trend was the South Korean company Samsung, if I I'm not mistaken. For the second year in a row, the Galaxy A line of smartphones combines relatively simple features with quality design and flagship-style materials. The new Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus are made on the same principle as Samsung's Galaxy A series: we take balanced, but not maximum characteristics, pack them in a stylish metal case and get a beautiful smartphone that looks more expensive than it really is.

I'll start with the cost, because this is the most important thing. In China, where the Oppo R9 and R9 Plus will be sold, the cost of the younger version will be 2,800 yuan (about 30,000 rubles or $430), the older version will cost 3,300 yuan (about 35,000 rubles or $510).

The main feature of smartphones is, of course, the design and body materials. The Oppo R9 and R9 Plus really have minimal margins to the left and right of the screen, only 1.7 millimeters. The body is made of metal, convex Gorilla Glass 4 is used on the front side, neat thin plastic inserts are made for the antennas on the “back” of the device. To be honest, the front of the new Oppo R9 and K9 Plus resemble the Meizu MX5 and Meizu Pro 5, and the back of this couple is a practical exact copy of the Apple iPhone 6/6S Plus. Is this good or bad from an ethical point of view? I don't know, I don't ask this question. In terms of design, appearance and feel, Oppo did everything right - the devices look amazing in the renders and, I'm sure, in reality they will turn out to be no worse. Expensive, stylish smartphones in metal – this is how you can describe the R9 and R9 Plus.

According to the characteristics, there is a mixture of top parameters and more applicable to the middle segment. From the flagship smartphones got a high-resolution front camera: 16 MP, f / 2.0, various shooting modes and photo editing options. The second point is the amount of built-in and RAM. Both smartphones have 4 GB of RAM, and the minimum amount of internal memory starts at 64 GB for the R9 and ends at 128 GB for the R9 Plus. In addition, the devices are equipped with a microSD memory card slot, combined with a second compartment for a SIM card.

The selected platforms are more typical for the middle segment - Oppo R9 uses MediaTek Helio P10, and Oppo R9 Plus uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. Do not think that smartphones will be slow, not at all, just in both cases the company decided to use not top solutions, but something more versatile and, accordingly, affordable. Both smartphones are equipped with a screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels based on an AMOLED matrix, the display diagonal in Oppo R9 is 5.5’’, in Oppo R9 Plus – 6’’, so the devices are not tiny. At the same time, in their classes, smartphones are becoming one of the most compact, oddly enough, due to the record low thickness of the frames around the screens.

Located under the screen in the R9 and R9 Plus, the mechanical key is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, as is done in the Apple iPhone 5/6, Samsung flagships or Meizu Pro 5, for example. The shape of the key resembles that of the latter.

One of the features of smartphones is Oppo's own fast charging technology - VOOC. With regard to the R9 and R9 Plus, specific charging speeds were not announced at the presentation, except that they noted the possibility of a two-hour conversation on a smartphone after five minutes of charging.

The characteristics of the main cameras in the devices are somewhat different, the R9 uses a 13 MP module with 5 lenses and f / 2.2, and the R9 Plus camera has a resolution of 16 MP, the optics consists of 6 lenses, f / 2.0. In both cases, there is phase focusing, dual LED flash in different tones and video recording in FullHD resolution. There is no optical stabilization, and in general it is obvious that for these models, Oppo focuses on the front camera, and not on the main ones, no matter how strange it may sound.

A bit surprising is the fact that Oppo has introduced devices with ColorOS based on Android 5.1. On the other hand, a proprietary shell changes the logic and appearance of the system so much that there is no fundamental difference on which version of Android it will work on.

The battery capacity in the younger model is 2850 mAh, in the older one it is 4120 mAh.

In China, Oppo R9 goes on sale on March 24, pre-order for the model is already open, Oppo R9 Plus on April 12. The company did not say anything at the presentation about the plans and timing of bringing these models to the international market.

In my opinion, Oppo has taken an interesting direction with its R line - the focus is shifted from the pursuit of the best performance and value for money to the appearance, design, materials, and overall aesthetics of the smartphone. The new Oppo R9 and R9 Plus, although they look like clones of other devices manufactured by other companies, but, you see, they do not become less beautiful from this. Yes, smartphones are relatively expensive for their parameters, especially by the standards of the competitive Chinese market, but their performance personally captivates me. I would like to study the devices and see if everything is as great in terms of design, materials and perception as it seems from the pictures.
